$800 billion in tax revenue in the fiscal cliff negotiations. president obama has said there will be no deal unless taxes are raised on the wealthiest americ americans. but staunch conservatives don't want any kind of new taxes. that's where speaker boehner's job gets really tough. on piers morgan tonight newt gingrich said if all else fails, go over the cliff. >> i think that no deal is better than a bad deal. i think going off this cliff is less dangerous than letting things build up for a year or two years to an even bigger cliff. i think that the president clearly has staked out a position of nonseriousness. and i think that it's very difficult for the house republicans right now to find any practical way to get his attention. so, he just won an election. he is feeling very good about himself. he is posturing brilliantly, putting the republicans in a corner. they need to relax. they don't have an election until november 2014. >> senior congressional correspondent dana bash joins me now. dana, can we expect fire woworkt the meeting this morning? >> reporter: possibly

at the white house with president obama to discuss, what else? the fiscal cliff. states would be severely impacted because much of their revenue comes from the federal government. cnn white house correspondent dan lothian is at the white house. so, dan, who is trying to convince who? >> well, i think it's a little bit of both here. you have the president trying to sort of put pressure on them, if you will, these governors, to then they in turn should put pressure ontheir lawmakers to get a deal done. at the time the governors are here to let the president know there's some real consequences if this scenario plays out. a third of states out there get their revenue from federal grants according to a pew report, and that report also points out that states like virginia, for example, would be heavily impacted. why virginia? because it has a lot of military defense contractors. they're saying that they could be impacted to the tune of about $10 billion in economic activity falling. in addition to that, 120,000 jobs lost. take a look at a state like south dakota, for example. a very small state

you for that reporting from washington. >>> president obama talking about the fiscal cliff. in his first television interview since the election, that cliff, of course the combination of government spending cuts and tax increases that automatically go into effect on january 1st because people we elected to make a deal can't make a deal. yesterday, republicans proposed steep spending cuts but gave no ground on president obama's call to raise taxes on the wealthiest americans. here's what the president told bloomberg's white house correspondent about that. >> unfortunately the speaker's proposal right now is still out of balance. you know he talks, for example, about $800 billion worth of revenue but was he says he's going to do that by lowering rates. when you look at the platte it doesn't work. when i've said is, i am prepared to work with the speaker and democrats and republicans to go after excessive health care costs in our federal health care system, we're going to have to strengthen those systems and i think we can do that without hurting seniors, without hurting beneficiaries

the fiscal cliff, which i know you have been watching. you're very closely aligned with president obama having been the chair of the democratic national convention in september. i want to get your take on this. this is critical to your state. businesses in your state. taxpayers in your state. do you have any optimism that we may not go off the cliff? >> i do have optimism. there's no question about it. i think both sides understand that it's not in the nation's best interest for us to go off this cliff. people are tired of the partisanship. they want both sides to work together. they want them to do so in a balanced way. i agreed to join the stirring committee to fix the debt coalition and i have because the balance is that we have to make spending cuts. we have to address entitlements but we also have to make sure that we have the revenues that we need to make the investments that we need. education. infrastructure. transportation. research and development. workers training. all of those things are important things that we have to do. we have to get our spending in order as well. >> yo

are nowhere close to a deal to avert that fiscal cliff. the obama administration has laid out its plan calling for $1.6 trillion in new taxes. that includes letting the bush era tax cuts expire for those earning more than $250,000 a year. it's also pushing for a new $50 billion stimulus package and offering $400 billion in new cuts to medicare and other entitlement programs. but republican house speaker john boehner flatly rejected the plan on the table and what he calls the white house's unwillingness to compromise. >> i was just flabbergasted. i looked at him, i said, you can't be serious. i've never seen anything like it. you know, we've got seven weeks between election day and the end of the year. and three of those weeks have been wasted with this nonsense. >> you know, i think right now the best thing to do is for them to come to us and say, look, here's what we think makes sense. we've told them what we think makes sense. what we can't do is try to figure out what's going to be good for them. they have to come tell us. >> house minority leader and democrat nancy pelosi also jumping into

counterproposal for heading off the fiscal cliff was a nonstarter. president obama made clear today that it will not be possible to get a deal to avert the fiscal cliff without raising taxes on the wealthy. the gop's plan did promise $2.2 trillion in deficit savings over the next decade. that's about half of what the president promises in his plan. but the gop plan does it without any tax hikes on the rich. and that is not going to fly with democrats. republicans for their part are unhappy that the president's proposal calls for $200 billion more in stimulus spending over the next year. here is how that breaks down. $95 billion to extend the payroll tax cut for one year, $30 billion to extend jobless benefit for one year, $50 billion to spend on roads and bridges and another $25 billion on short-term stuff like a temporary tax deduction for small businesses. the argument in favor of the president's plan is this could help people still hurting from years of economic trouble, but you know as well as i do, stimulus is almost as bad a word to republicans as tax hike. those are two words

out and talk about the fiscal cliff or saying we must avoid falling off it towards something that could be helpful to the white house in the end. i remember back in 2008 it was john mccain that met with president obama. they met in his office in chicago. not at the white house. it seemed like that was the beginning, potentially of two leaders really working together. we have since seen that deteriorate. >> we can't judge personal kem tri. i think barack obama has more at stake in this lunch in the end than mitt romney. if obama can get romney to say something positive about moving a health care agenda forward after all obama care was built on the backs of romney care. if he can say something about the fiscal cliff, the president can gain some bipartisan credibility. it's also the right thing to do. the real tradition of this is started in 1960 with kennedy meeting nixon in florida, and since then it's pretty much pro forma. what is 50-50 is whether a friendship gets developed out of this kind of lunch. >> this is the kind of thing that we take for granted in the united states
